MARCHA MIGRANTE III SUCCESSFUL February 21, 2008 Greetings! MARCHA MIGRANTE III SUCCESSFUL Dear Subscribers: INTRODUCTION - We relay this information recently received from Enrique Morones, leader of Border Angels and founder of MARCHA MIGRANTE, as the caravan concludes its third year trip to many cities throughout the northeast of the United States with the message - SU VOTO ES SU VOZ - YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE. We applaud this endeavor and self- sacrifice to spread the word that the vote does count combined with education and organization and mass mobilization of people pursuing their dream of a life with dignity in the United States. There is every indication that voter turn-out of Latinos, new U.S. citizens, formerly immigrants, and young people to participate in the party primary elections is trumping previous recent records, and what's more, if the trend holds we can expect and predict a voter tsunami favorable to progressive change in the November elections. This can only bode well for fair, rational, and humane immigration reform. Thank you Enrique Morones and the Border Angels for your leadership. Nativo V. Lopez National President -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MARCHA MIGRANTE III, RETURNS HOME, WHAT A JOURNEY, WHAT A RECEPTION, THANKS ALL AS WE COULD NOT HAVE ASKED FOR MORE. SU VOTO ES SU VOZ IS HEARD AND ACTED UPON FROM COAST TO COAST. MUCH MORE WORK AHEAD. SI SE PUEDE After 4500 miles, 51 autos, 33 cities, in six states MARCHA MIGRANTE III returns home. (See full report below, Gracias ! Su Voto, es Su Voz! ) Record turnouts across USA MARCHA MIGRANTE III BACK HOME, THOUSANDS WELCOME ON SUNDAY, GRACIAS! "Thanks to all the wonderful people that came out to welcome us, feed us, house us share their stories and hear our plea, SU VOTO ES SU VOZ !!! Another huge MARCHA MIGRANTE !" states Enrique Morones, organizer/creator of the MARCHA MIGRANTES. The first MARCHA MIGRANTE (Feb, 2006) helped galvanize people to take to the streets and protest 4437 & ask for humane and comprehensive immigration reform; the second MARCHA (Feb, 2007) gave us the stories on why we need the reform; but this MARCHA MIGRANTE ) Feb 2-17, 2008 is the most important as it gives us the "how to" achieve these goals, VOTE! SU VOTO, ES SU VOZ was heard from the US/Mexican border to the Canadian/US border as the international community again came out to support MARCHA MIGRANTE, and then go out and vote in record numbers. This Sunday February 17th, MARCHA MIGRANTE III returns to San Diego @ 1:00 PM BORDER FIELD STATE PARK, to walk the final mile to the "wall of death, the wall of shame" operation gatekeeper. . where a fence separates to neighboring countries and Elvira Arellano (of the sanctuary movement) will meet the marchers from the Tijuana side (something she was denied by the Canadians on the Canadian border) to welcome home the remaining marchers after a 4500 mile journey, one mile for every know death of the US/Mexican border. MARCHA MIGRANTE III (Feb 2-17, 2008) San Diego to Canadian Border and back 6 States, multiple cities, and two international borders... Tu voto, es tu voz!!! Marcha Migrante I (rose up against 4437, no more deaths) Marcha Migrante II (shared stories on why we need humane immigration reform) Marcha Migrante III (Tu voto es tu voz. Your vote is your voice) 2/2 Day 1 (3 cities) San Diego, Calexico, Coachella Thanks to the 200 or so people that came to see us off on the Historic MARCHA MIGRANTE III. We even had the rejected minutemen of Caltrans fame seeing us off! (great video for CALTRANS TO SEE) Aztec dancers, prayers, Mexico's Human Rights Commission and more that 50 organizations represented in a rousing send off of two dozen autos on our 4,500 mile journey (one mile of every known death on the border) Our first stop was our traditional stop at the Holtville Cemetery where 600+ of our more than 10,000 brethren that lost their lives since October of 1994 (when Operation Gatekeeper began) are buried. We shared prayer and reflection before having dinner in Calexico...and heading to Coachella to sleep. 2/3 Day 2 (2 cities) Coachella, Los Angeles Sleep, what sleep? When we arrived in Coachella late at night on Saturday the villagers were there to receive us with the warmth and charm that only a small town can deliver. We went to sleep at midnight then were suddenly awakened (5:00 am) by half the town with "las mananitas", musica de danza, mariachis, flowers, food and even a short skit prepared by the locals in appreciation of our work and MARCHA MIGRANTE III. A wake up call we will remember fondly for the rest of our lives. At 700 a. m. we experienced one of the most beautiful Catholic masses I have ever attended...GRACIAS COACHELLA! "Cities for All: Integrating Our Communities" February 08, 2008 Greetings! "Cities for All: Integrating Our Communities" Dear Subscribers: I personally invite you to attend, participate in any form available to you, and support this extremely important community-based conference, which seeks to bring our communities together and make local municipal governmnet relevant to all residents irrespective of their immigration status. The conveners of the conference are the leaders who were personally responsible for taking the initiative and proposing to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors the concept of the municipal I.D. for any and all residents. This was truly innovative and responsive to the most repressive public policy of denying I.D.s and driver's licenses to undocumented migrants, which prevails in the state of California. They found the way, and local government obeyed their petition and did the right thing. Yes, they did the right thing and demonstrated leadership and courage as municipal elected officials who represented those who elected them and those who do not, but together comprise the tax-paying residents of the community. Can this experience be shared and exported to other municipalities throughout California? This is the challenge and the opportunity. For example, why not Los Angeles where the political elected leadership is a super-majority of self-described liberal Democrats - Latinos, African Americans, Jewish-Americans, and whites? Why not the city of Santa Ana where the majority of the city council and mayor is of Mexican immigrant stock? Why not San Jose, Fresno, Santa Maria, Salinas, Delano, and hundreds of other cities where Latinos and immigrants comprise the majority or super-majority residents of the respective cities? This is the essence of the conference convened by such notable grassroots leaders as Miguel Robles and the committees and networks he and other leaders have successfully constructed over the years. They are building a broad consensus of reasonableness in favor of dignity - and we support them, as should you. Thank you. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Organization/Community Member, The city and county of San Francisco recently approved an ordinance to issue municipal identification cards to all its residents. The idea to issue identification cards arose from the desire that undocumented immigrants be respected as fellow residents and be given the dignity to verify their identities. This idea was then broadened to address the needs of other members of our community, such as the elderly, homeless and transgendered. La Alianza LatinoAmericana por los Derechos de los Inmigrantes (ALDI), a grassroots, volunteer organization in the Bay Area which helped make this legislation a reality cordially invite you to the Conference: "Cities for All: Integrating Our Communities". Saturday February 16, 2008. Women's Building, 3543 18th St #8 San Francisco, CA We are inviting local government officials and organizations from said "sanctuary" cities around the state to come learn about the implementation of these ID cards. Through this conference we will discuss the need and the tools necessary to implement municipal ID cards as well as other policies and issues in recognizing and addressing the needs of marginalized groups in our communities. We hope that your organization can make this event. Moreover at this point we ask that you join our efforts by endorsing this conference and sending a donation, any amount is appreciated. The third workshop would be about the media and its role in further marginalizing certain groups in particular the anti- immigrant discourse that has escalated since 9/11.
